Canton, Michigan Animal Shelters

Canton, MI, is a very animal-friendly community with numerous animal shelters and, to the joy of many on two or four legs, a new dog park. The Canton Dog Park, which just opened in May, is a six-acre, fenced-in area for dogs to run leash-free. The park is divided into two sections: one for large dogs, and another for smaller dogs. It is already extremely popular with the local dog owners. On the other hand, the shelters in Canton each offer something different; some of the shelters are listed below.

Waggin’ Tails Dog Rescue – This is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit rescue group run by unpaid volunteers. Although they do not own a formal shelter, all dogs accepted by Waggin’ Tails are moved to foster homes where they receive all the same attention and medical care they would at a typical rescue facility. This technique actually helps to find the animals the perfect owner for them. There are adoption events every other Saturday at either the Canton Petco or the Canton Petsmart where the animals are available to take home. To see a list of dogs available for adoption from Waggin’ Tails, click here.

Homeward Bound Rescue League – Another entirely volunteer-run, non-profit, no kill animal rescue organization is the Homeward Bound Rescue League in operation since 2006. This shelter is dedicated to finding quality, safe homes for the dogs and cats they take in (HBRL accepts all breeds). In just the short amount of time this shelter has been open, they have placed over 1,550 dogs and cats into either foster or permanent homes. Every Saturday (for puppies/dogs) and Sunday (for kittens/cats), HBRL can be found at Pet Supplies Plus in Canton from noon – 3:30 p.m.

Daisy’s Doghouse Rescue – Daisy’s Doghouse is a non-profit rescue dedicated to saving small dogs from being euthanized, neglected or abused. Similar to Waggin’ Tails, there is no shelter or kennel on site, so all rescues are kept in foster homes. Daisy’s also ensures a high-quality match between owner and adopted pet by performing home visits prior to any finalized adoption. This shelter is also dedicated to educating the public in hopes of permanently ending animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation. They also provide services such as referrals for grooming, no-cost spay/neuter services, dog training and behavior classes, and more.

Michigan Humane Society – Yet another 501(c) 3 private, non-profit, the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) is the oldest and largest in the state. Each year, more than 100,000 animals are cared for and placed in either foster homes or permanent homes. MHS accepts all animals and provides emergency rescue services every day of the year. MHS is also considered one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the U.S, yet it receives no government funding and therefore survives completely on donations. With four MHS locations and six offsite adoption centers (all located at various Petsmart locations) throughout Michigan, you’re bound to find one that is close to home.
